Jon Weisberger - Nashville Scene

Frankly, any evening with Vince Gill would be a good thing, but when it’s the kickoff to the Ryman’s annual Bluegrass Nights series in the centennial anniversary of Bill Monroe’s birth, it’s bound to be beyond just good. Gill tends to assemble bands (and setlists) for his bluegrass shows on a just-in-time basis, but early word has it that the crucial fiddle and banjo slots will be filled respectively by the masterful Stuart Duncan and Jim Mills, the latter an IBMA award winner whose Nashville absence has been felt since his departure from Ricky Skaggs’ band last year. Add stalwarts Mike Bub on bass and Jeff White on guitar, and even the most jaded ’grasser will admit to something special — and that’s before taking into account the man up front, now plowing into his fourth decade as one of the strongest all-around bluegrass pickers and singers there is.
