I am an avid lover of many types of music, with the exception of rap and hip hop. I have learned so much about my musical identity in the last 5-10 years. I make no apologies for basically being a rock and roll/blues fan. What I did not realize until I got older is the connection among the genres, and how much that appeals to me, alas when it works. Stand by, gong to try to explain this via vlogging with some you tube videos. |

I have had my share of concerns over the direction of many of the music genres over the last 20 years.
I am a long time fan of Eric Clapton's and am so pleased that guitarist, Joe Bonamassa go to play with him. Joe's guitar playing is so impressive to me, that I know someone is there to take over in Clapton's place when the time comes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEEfDdJyxPY...ayer_detailpage More Joe B., this time with his jaw dropping acoustic work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRxqYoZiYPU...ayer_detailpage |

This is a remake of a song by Jack White's former group, The Raconteurs. Love this video. I admit, I thought that Jack White's music was too young for me when I heard him with the White Stripes. I have come to know and appreciate Jack's work.

Thanks for posting these links.I am also a multi genre music fan country being my favorite and Vince most definitely my favorite .Having said that I go from George Benson in concert to 2 weeks later Alan Jackson,John Mellencamp,Tony Bennett etc . Variety is the spice......... Why thank you Ann! I favor the blues and what can be related to it. My fave rock and roll has a strong blues influence too. I don't see "real" country music as being far from the blues. I can just picture the old days in the south, going down one street, you could hear country music and just down the street from that, someone was crankin' out the blues. I share VG's concern with the direction of music, however, if history repeats itself, the pendulum will swing back in the authentic direction. That said, I want to be careful not to sound offensive here. I recently read someone describing VG as neo-country and I think I am happy with that. I don't think that you have to sound like Hank Williams to be considered authentic country. I am a huge AJ fan too, would add him to the neo-country too. Now that we have likely agreed that w of our faves to this category, too bad I can't think of a term to somehow imply, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Hope that I do not offend anyone here by saying that I have an almost luring index finger, as if to say, "Psst, Vince, come on over to the blues, it has not been corrupted." I would never want VG to totally give up country, he has too many loyal fans and his heart is there. Alas, his extraordinary creative spirit is calling him to explore elsewhere, I can feel it. |

Some, lol, many do not understand my being a fan of VG's or AJ's, or several others because my musical identity has long been associated with being a die hard Led Zeppelin fan, then of course, Eric Clapton.
I will likely bore all of you sharing my thoughts on how this came to be, but will tell you that "Stairway To Heaven" was never a fave song of mine, don't hate it in the least, it was just sooooo overplayed in the 70's! Just like Clapton, have been drawn to their blues! Like many of the early British invaders, they were huge fans of our blues and country music. Hope someone gets something out of these links. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zISiQ6PqATI...ayer_detailpage I have no idea, why they have a Bron -Yr-Aur- Stomp (Welsh term, minus the word 'Stomp" which translates as breast of gold or golden breast) and this one, which is simply, Bron-Yr-Aur from their Physical Graffiti alblum. Love this song, I could hear on my death bed, it is such a song of peace and acceptance to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQKQ3-bzXV8...ayer_detailpage |

Vince has said die hard country and bluegrass is what he truly loves but he has a great appreciation for music talent .He likes the sad hard side of music . He can do anything as well as anyone and better than most .I love the way he goes off and does different stuff with different artist .To me that shows true talent and love of what he does. You will never hear me ever criticize anything Vince Gill does .
Having said all the above I do not appreciate anyone who can not see the talent in someone just because they don't happen to like what that person does . Sounds as tho you and I sorta agree on the music issue . -------------------- "Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it a rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul."

Don't get me wrong with this, I honestly intend any desire to see VG with some of my other faves as a sincere compliment to him. Love what Robert Plant did with Alison Krauss a few years ago with their Grammy winning release, "Raising Sand." Robert met Alison at a tribute to blues singer, Ledbelly. Robert has been a fan of bluegrass and country years before h e had fame for Led Zeppelin. There is a certain purity and structure to bluegrass that he had to learn. Hope these videos help. Wish I could find a live one with great audio, this will have to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtpeLia33PY...ayer_detailpage LOVE this one with Alison covering Black Dog bluegrass style. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lgzs6pT26KI...ayer_detailpage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5KF4dKq-6I...ayer_detailpage In a heartbeat, could see Robert and VG together, think they could create something very interesting. |

I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of other types of music, especially a lot of the music that's out these days. While all my friends in high school were listening to rock and heavy metal (Bon Jovi, etc), I was listening to country music. I do like the rock and roll of the 1950s, even though I was a child of the 1970s and 1980s. I do have to admit that I loved roller skating to Olivia Newton John's Grease Lightning and a lot of the other disco songs, including The Bee Gees, The Jackson 5 and the group that did YMCA. Also, when I was radio station surfing, if I heard Michael Jackson's Thriller come on the radio I'd stop and listen, along with some of his other songs. But hard rock and heavy metal are two kinds of music that I can't stand to listen to. It wasn't until Bon Jovi sang with Jennifer Nettles and Kid Rock did "Picture" that I realized that some of these hard rock/heavy metal artists CAN actually sing (not all of them, but some of them, anyways). If Bon Jovi would release a country album and I heard some of the songs on it, I'd probably go out and buy it. What I don't like about a lot of the other genres of music is that the music drowns out the singer's voice and you can't hear them or even what they're singing a lot of times.
As for Rap music (and Rap shouldn't even be CALLED music, IMO), unless it's Neal McCoy doing his Hillbilly Rap, I won't even bother listening to it! -------------------- Valerie

I don't care for hard rock heavy metal hip hop or rap .But I's cut anyone slack if they like it just don't want it forced on me . I was born in Kentucky and until I was almost 13 I listened to my Grandma's battery operated radio and the Opry was on every Sat.night if the batteries were good .When school was out I would go to Indiana with my Mom and I would listen to Randy's record shop out of Gallatin,Tn .R&B and a station out of Del Rio,Tx . Also watched The Dorsey's when they were on t v and absolutely loved those spectacular musical movies so I gained a great appreciation for Big Band music .Glen Miller etc. String Of Pearls was a fave of mine. My first real heart throb country person was Marty Robbins OMG I loved his music so much and now I live just minutes from his birth place of Glendale,Az. Just ordered a bio "20th.Century Drifter . Then there were no more heart throbs until Elvis and now Vinny .Lots of likes in between but those have been die hard faves for years.Heck I just love music .

Interesting points everyone. Though I am most identified with being a rock and roller, the rock and roll that has attracted me from day one has a rather pronounced blues influence. Rock and roll was born from the blues, I can clearly hear it with much of Elvis' early work. Many that made their mark in American rock and roll are from the Mississippi Delta area, of which some of our finest blues music originated.
I never intend for my passion of my music to be pushy, I hope no one sees it that way. I see the one person that can carry the torch for those like Clapton with epic justice as being Joe Bonamassa. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...p;v=8SMjL5u5D40 Vince was impressed with Joe B. too. They recorded together. I can see why. As was mentioned earlier, VG is drawn to a deeper side of music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=playe...p;v=zNFm8gS8gCg Vince also recorded with Johnny Winter of the 70's band Edgar Winter. I was not a fan of their music in the 70's. Johnny returned to his blues roots and that is why VG recorded with him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=racYK9ukuUw...ayer_detailpage I think that I share much of Vince's taste in music. I think that we see the same connections. |

Why build walls with music? As many issues that I have with the direction that it tends to be going, I often watch how brilliant music can shine when done well and shared. Music has managed to bring this world together in a way that few politicians or governments have. May those creating it today ask themselves if their work is a positive contribution and a likely candidate to endure the test of time.

From things Vince has said about music I think you share how he feels. That to me is why he records with so many different artists .He seems to be everywhere .
