I've been deployed again, now I'm in Houston. Cathy, Valerie, I may travel to visit you guys, I don't remember where our other Texans are. So, what is there to do in Houston when I'm not working??

I arrived yesterday, had only 1 hour of sleep the night before since my flight was so early. And today we switched hotels since the other one wanted $10.00 a day for parking and $10.00 a day for internet! I don't think so, I can't afford that so now I'm somewhere where they are both free biggrin.gif

Talk to ya later, I'm tired and off to bed early tonight!
Becky
Wow Pam!!! So you are off working again, huh??? Well...I don't have a clue as to what you can do in TX, but I'm sure that Cathy and Val can help you out there!!! Stay safe ok??? And keep in touch!!!

Pam,

You're much closer to Cathy than you are me. You're probably about an hour from Cathy...3 hours from me. Some things to do in Houston are the Houston Zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Cathy would know more of what there is to do in Houston, but in Galveston there is Moody Gardens, which has a variety of attractions, and there's a house that has cherubs all on the ceilings....I can't remember the name of it, but I'm sure Cathy can tell you. Oh, also in Galveston there's also Schlitterbahn, which is a water park...there's also one just north of San Antonio, which we were to about 16 years ago.

Pam, What are you doing in Texas? I haven't heard any news. Are they up for another storm? You get that rest girl and be careful.

Pam:

Today - Aug 3rd - is the first time I saw this post. I've been just jumping on the Board now and then and half reading stuff. Sorry I didn't see this! Let me know where you are in Houston. PM me please. Are you guys still working with the New Orleans people still in Houston?

Today is the first time I've been back on since my first post. I'm working on recertifications for old hurricanes. They may send some of us to El Paso or Ohio, but for now I'm here. We were going to go to Galveston today, but will probably wait for next Saturday or the one after that, depending on what happens here. Money is tight with fema this year, so no overtime for me. At least for now, so I had yesterday off, and I looked around the area, but besides a couple shopping malls, didn't see anything interesting to do, without spending a lot of money. Someone mentioned the Woodside area would be nice to visit, not really sure what it is, or what is there.

Spent this morning doing laundry and talking to team members who are staying at the same place as me. We are near the Reliant Center. My laptop doesn't work in my room so I won't be on much since I have to bring it down to the lobby to use it. Oh well, at least I can check in once in a while.

Pam,

If you want to go to a mall, there's the Galleria in Houston. They have an ice skating rink...we were to the one in Dallas before, and it's just neat to go there and watch them skate. BTW, the ice rink in the Galleria is the one where Tara Lipinski trained at.

My mom said the Museum of Natural Science has some interesting exhibits, including a Butterfly garden...it costs something like $5 to get in.

There's also Sam Houston Park, which has 7 historic homes, Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, Tunnels underground which connect 55 buildings, an Underground Mall (I think I'll have to visit that sometime...sounds interesting! *L*), Water Wall (man-made waterfall), and quite a few other things that probably wouldn't be too hard on the wallet. Here's a list for when you can get back online: Houston Attractions

You might want to skip Moody Gardens, since money is tight...not sure what the cost is of that is now. I know there's also some kind of attraction that has a train you can ride..it's probably more of a kids attraction, but it might be neat to see. I know Cathy knows where it's at, because she told Becky.

The house with the cherubs on the walls/ceilings is called Bishop's Palace. And more things to do in Houston

Just try to keep us posted Pam. Miss you. Hope you can make it to Vegas. You take care

Hey all! I did a quick trip to Galveston yesterday. We were a bit disappointed, it wasn't what we were expecting. I was thinking blue water, white beaches like the Florida Gulf, but it was murky brown water, no way would I go in without being able to see what else was in the water!

So we left and went to Kemah and spent a few hours walking the boardwalk, window shopping and watching the beautiful boats. Today, I probably will do the weekly laundry and maybe a little sightseeing or window shopping in Houston.

Some of us are being sent home Friday, (not me), I'll probably leave the following Friday or shortly thereafter since work is winding down here, for the moment anyway.

Hope everyone is doing good, and the weird weather and nasty storms are not being a problem for anyone.
Anna Leighton
Good to hear from you ,Pam. Sorry you trip was not what you ecpected. I wouldn't go in that water either.

Still hot in Az. but I am out of here for a week in Washington State on the 21st. Going to see one of my kids and explore a new place I've never seen. I wouldn't mind a little Western Washington rain but I am told that August is the driest month there. Oh well I'll be near the water anyhoo.

Take care and hurry home. December isn't that far away laugh.gif

Hey Pam!!! We've been to Kemah!!! We went there a few years ago when we went on a cruise out of Galveston. We had an evening in town before we left on the cruise, so Cathy (bestamaw) suggested we spend our time at Kemah..it's a nice area...if you can find a parking place...LOL!!! That was the first time we ate at The Aquarium restaurant...great seafood there!!! They have since added one to the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville and we've eaten there a time or two since then. Love to watch all the fishies swimming around while we are eating...well, fishies...LOL!!!

I don't think we will sail out of Galveston again...the port there is in the middle of an industrial site and there's nothing to look at there except for other ships loading and unloading and lots of big truck trailers everywhere!!! We never saw the beaches there...

Stay safe and let us know when you'll be coming home. It's nice to hear from you!!!
