The second to the last paragraph says:
"The show's highlight came in an unusual turn. After a fan persistently shouted a request for it, Gill played a solo acoustic version of "Colder Than Winter," a post-breakup ballad that he recorded in 1984. His vocal performance and emotional investment were noticeably more intense in this rarely performed song."
We were really close and nearly dead center stage, so I figured I would just stand up at some point during the show and request the one song I really really wanted Vince to sing----Colder Than Winter. I figured my fear of yelling out things in crowds could be overcome with a few glasses of wine. I under-estimated my fear....I found out that there is no amount of liquid courage I could drink to overcome that.
So I wrote the song down on a scrap piece of paper. The guy on my right, he told me to wad it up and try to hit Vince's guitar in the middle of a song, that he would surely notice that. Now I was simply paralized holding this note. The guy on my left, my husband, he grabbed the note and walked it up to the stage. I don't think Vince ever noticed, and besides, the liquid courage made my handwriting somewhat illegible.
I could not do it, I could not make a sound. So the yin to my yang, my husband, he became my voice. Only he would not stop. Yes, he was the persistent fan, the one who kept shouting out "Colder Than Winter Vince" up until the point when I think Vince told him he was gonna chicken fight him and kick dust in his mouth, just please stop yelling at him. Vince said he'd see if he could remember that 26 year old song.....
Vince played a lot of stuff and I was having a great time. I told my hubby, when I could tell he was gonna yell that song out one more time, that it was okay if Vince didn't sing it, just let it be, the man heard you already.
And then Vince sang The Key of Life, the song I heard him do before when I was dragged to a country show and I didn't know who Vince Gill was, the song I listened to and understood because I too had lost my daddy years before, and I loved my daddy so and knew the pain of losing him, and here this man sang about this too....I was a bonded fan for life at that moment. And next he sang Colder Than Winter. The guy on my right, the one I barely knew, I grabbed his arm and told him "This is gonna be AWESOME!"......and it was awesome. It was the best I've ever heard him sing of that song....well, that is of the two old recorded versions I have heard. I did not think it could get any better than that...but I was wrong again and it did get better....because the next song he sang was the one I found in the cd player of my Mom's car when she was comatose in hospice, at the darkest of my moments, when I was full of self-loathing and doubt, a song I am convinced my Mom somehow left there for me to find to give me comfort in despair.....he sang Go Rest High on That Mountain. There was never a sweeter place in which to sandwich Colder Than Winter.
He did a few more songs, and the band finished and exited after Liza Jane....we all rushed the stage and yelled for them to come back....they did and we all sang together "What You Give Away". I saw a lot of smiles in the band at that time....it was a really good show. It was awesome.
And I was so stoked afterwards, that I was the one the next day who insisted we go on a barnstorming bi-plane ride----the kind you wear goggles and a leather helmet for....It was awesome too! I don't know how I just threw away that awful fear of heights I had.....certainly the last place I thought I would be. I also suggested we try skydiving......
