Full Version: My 100th show-Copper Mountain
The Nineteenth Hole > The Nineteenth Hole > The Main Room
Kathy Lorentzen
Hi all, we are just back from our trip to Colorado. The Copper Mountain show was wonderful! John and I had a fantastic day. We started out by hooking up with Vince's tour manager, Scott, who gave us all access passes to celebrate that it was my 100th Vince show. Then, we didn't even really need to use them, because we ran smack into Vince and Amy a few minutes later and they stopped to have a nice chat. Copper Mt elevation is 10,000 feet, and when John asked Vince 'can you sing up here?', Vince's answer was 'hell no', but he pulled it off admirably.

Hugh, the sound tech, invited us to spend the show in the sound tent with him, and we decided to take him up on his kind offer. The show was outside, with the stage set up facing the ski run, and the seating was all general admission, bring a chair or a blanket. The sound tent was raised on a platform and perfectly positioned for a full center view of the stage and the sound was just outstanding.

Vince and band came on exactly at 2:30 and the show ran a full three and a half hours. I have a set list, so I can tell you exactly how it went. Vince opened with eight songs, some old, some new. Then the Del McCoury Band did six songs, then Vince came back and did three songs, then Amy came out and did five songs, (with Vince on guitar), and they did "Faint of Heart" together. Vince did a couple more, then the Del band came back for five more songs, after which Vince joined them for Give me the Highway, All Prayed Up and Old Joe Clark.

Then it was time for a special treat! Jenny, who had been singing backup, did two solo songs, a cover of a Bonnie Raitt number that she just nailed, and her dad's "Whenever You Come Around". We've watched Jenny sing with Vince off and on since she was about 11, and she has certainly grown into a wonderful singer and a personable performer. She seems so happy and comfortable on stage.

Then Vince did a couple more songs, and Amy came back and they did "House of Love" and she did a new song that she just wrote for Vince called "True Love", and another new song. Vince finished up with "Cowgirls" and then came back to encore with Liza Jane and Go Rest High.

The show lasted until 6pm and there wasn't a moment of down time for the entire three and a half hours. Vince didn't talk a lot, he said he needed to save the available oxygen for singing, but he was in a great mood.

The weather was gorgeous and the crowd enthusiastic. After the show, we could have gone backstage but didn't, as we had already talked with Vince and some of the band. Vince did a quick meet and greet and then they piled on the bus to head for Reno for a day of gambling and relaxation before their show in Oregon. Benny stayed the night at Copper Mt so we ended up spending a couple hours in the bar with him, where he shared a lot of funny stories that I promised would go no further!

The day was just fantastic. I highly recommend the Copper Mountain Music Festival as a destination. The village is great, the restaurants, vendors, shopping, etc are terrific and the scenery is spectacular. I don't know who is playing next year but I'll be keeping an eye out.

I did ask Hugh, Benny and Scott if there is a plan for next year, and at this point, there isn't. Scott said if he had to guess he would think there might be a modest tour, maybe 30-40 shows, spread in perhaps three groups around the country. But there are no plans at this time, so we will just have to wait and see what Vince decides to do.

John and I want to thank everybody for being so nice to us and special thanks to the cast for a really memorable show. On Monday we went on to Aspen and hiked in the mountains for a couple of days. We were celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary and our entire trip was just great.

Wow!Nice detailed story of your "Vince hang". I am over 100 shows but not sure exactly how many. It starts at the Palamino in '83 & I will add the Greek Theatre show tomorrow to the list. I have seen him from Maui to Wolf Trap,Va. & many places inbetween.

Well how come we've never run into one another? LOL. We haven't seen Vince in Maui, but we've been to Wolf Trap and as far west as the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup, south as far as Atlanta and north to Casino Rama in Ontario. And, like you say, a whole lot of points in between.

We need to make a point to hook up somewhere. Have a great time at the Greek Theatre tomorrow, this is just a fantastic show. We saw the regular These Days show ten times but this Family and Friends thing takes the cake. I know you will love it.

Cool, looking forward to it. Most of my shows have been out west. A ton in California, Arizona & Nevada. I did go to New York to see the first "These Days" show at the Nokia Theatre. On "These Days" Tour saw NY, Vegas, L.A, North San Diego, Escondio & I think that's it. Gonna try Indio & Prescott too after the Greek.

Wow! What a wonderful description of your day and show with Vince and Amy. I saw the show here in Casper, Wyoming the night before they were in Copper Mountain. I'm so envious that you got to meet him and talk with him. He seems like such a genuine and down-to-earth guy. I'd enjoy meeting him sometime. Last Saturday's show was only my 2nd show....both were great. It was my second Amy show, too. Both were great as well. Congratulations on your 100th!!

You saw Vince back in 1983 - wow, I wish I could have seen him at that time. My 1st Vince show was in 1979 when he was with Pure Prairie League. They were playing at Disneyland and my parents were fans....I was only 4 yrs old. My brother was about 6 months old at the time.
Vince comes walking out of the concert area and my dad starts talking to him and Vince wanted to hold my little brother! I have always loved Vince since then but was so shy, I was hiding behind my mom when Vince was talking to them. Haha!! I am waiting for another chance to meet him - maybe next year!
