Yes it's true that Porter died Sunday....he died around 8:30pm, at the same time Vince's induction was taking place. I'm sure Vince was thinking of Porter Saturday night...I was listening to the last part of Vince's portion, where he was inducting Josh Turner, and Vince mentioned Porter. Porter had been released from the hospital and into hospice care on either Thursday or Friday (can't remember which), so I'm sure everyone knew he was in the last stage and didn't have much longer to live, although I'm also sure that no one thought it would be just a few days.
Vince, talked fondly of Porter at the Ryman show last night. He said that he will forever remember that Porter passed on as Vince was getting into the HOF and that memory will stay with him forever. He dedicated a beautiful rendition of Go Rest High on That Mountain to Porter. He got a standing ovation afterwords.
Porter has this to say about Vince in a July interview:
Asked in a July interview about who might fill his shoes as an Opry ambassador, Wagoner said, “I think Vince Gill is a real strong, stable person. He’s the one that comes to mind first. He’s a wonderful singer and entertainer.”
