Vince......proof that you are the Man. Absolutely class act diss on Conya West. I could hardly believe the egotistical comments by the rap artist, but was enthralled with your ability to put the youngster back in his place. Smooth move Vince!! Your the King.

I about shut the show off when Kanye made his comment about plans to be the greatest recording artist ever to fulfill a "promise to my mother". Vince got perspective back into the show with his jack up of the rapper. Leave it to the Country Music star to bring realism back to the show. Kinda like what Trace Adkins did on the Apprentice.

Well this is how an article on Kanye....discussed it....and made it out as a "tip of the hat"....not a diss....
"He sang it with lyrics updated for the occasion:
"Last night I saw you in my dreams/ Now I can't wait to go to sleep. ... This life, this here, this Grammys, all of this is all a dream/ My real life, it starts when I go to sleep."
Even other artists accepting awards had to tip their caps to West, who seems fast becoming the Jack Nicholson of the Grammys.
After being handed his award by Ringo Starr, Vince Gill said: "I just got an award given to me by a Beatle. Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?"
Sitting in the audience behind dark, white-frame sunglasses, West leaned back and laughed.

way to go Vince... His comment about Kanye was the highlight of the evening, except for Vinces's win... What a classy way to put this egotistical rapper in his place... Only Vince could have done it...

I think Kanye has a very *long* way to go to even come close to the number of Grammys Vince or Alison Krauss have! And Stevie Wonder has 28 Grammys. Vince & Alison are both catching up, but have a ways to go yet.

You guys (and I am not speaking of anyone in particular) believe what you want. I honestly do NOT believe Vince was slamming anyone....not even Kanye....he was making a joke about how he wins so much (Kanye).
It is NOT in Vince's character to lash out. I think that was the furthest thing from Vince's thoughts.
That's just my honest opinion.
Nowhere does it say that's what people thought at the awards.
I could care less if i am in the minority on this - it is not a diss....it was an admission that this night beloned to Kanye - all his wins and his tribute to his Mother. I may not like his music but I am not going to read into something that I think was there when it was not.

i think it is typical classy vincce........you can read into it what you want.......tongue in cheek, funny, but also making a point. i can't stand kanye and his comments were rediculous, so i take vince's comments as a point of that. if people like kanye they can just think it was a funny comment about the number of wins he has.
one thing we definitley agree on is vinces class......as opposed to mr. west

I agree with that.
I am not defending Kanye's huge ego (or his comments)...I am standing up for Vince....he was making a joke. Vince does not bash...it's not in his good character.....That's my opinion. Period.
My wife watched it too and while we are not fans of Kanye....Vince was joking. I think many want to read into it because they dislike Kanye's comments or his act or whatever....that does not mean Vince's joke was a diss.
That's NOT the way I see it. That's not the way the crowd at the grammy's saw it - or the media.
I won't go on about this anymore - let's be HAPPY for Vince's win!

I don't think Vince really meant the comment to be a 'dis' on Kanye, I think it was more of like a 'hey, you might be winning all the awards tonight, but I'm getting *my* award from a Legend....who's been giving you you're awards?' IMO, I'd say it was more like Vince teasing Kanye than dissing him.

At first, I really couldn't figure out what Vince meant by his comment, especially after hearing Kanye's comment about how he deserved to win AOTY, but after giving it some thought, and reading the posts here and then your comment, Charlie, I got to thinking that he probably meant it in the way that kids tease each other, when they go "na na na na na, my sandcastle is bigger than yours" on the playground.

It was meant as a joke. I don't think Vince has ever been disrespectful of another artist in his life. He was teasing with West and West thought it was funny.

I guess Vince and those close to him are really the only one's that know exactly what Vince meant by the comment. It really isn't worth having a debate over as when it all comes down to it....we are all fans of Vince's and are here to congratulate him on an amazing achievement.

Here are comments that Vince made backstage at the Grammy's.
8:48 p.m.: Hey, does affable country star Vince Gill like Kanye West? Why, yes, he does. Not only that, Gill says, "I just enjoy his spunk." Vince Gill
8:48 p.m.: Gill won his 19th career Grammy tonight for Best Country Album. And he wouldn't mind winning more. Says Gill: "I'll take as many as they want to give me."
8:50 p.m.: If there's anything more borderline surreal than Vince Gill crediting Kanye West with spunk, it's Vince Gill doing an Amy Winehouse imitation: "I loved her reaction [to winning]—'Ohhh.' "
Regardless of what we all think....Vince's comment is getting alot of press. Here is another comment that was made about Vince's award acceptance.
Most Unlikely Rap Feud Contestant: After noting he'd just accepted a music award from one of the Beatles, the mild-mannered Vince Gill teased Kanye West with a sly tweak, "Have you had that happen yet, Kanye?"

Hey----Vince's comment about Kanye was the funniest moment of the evening!
And he was truely honored to be given the award by a Beatle. When he said that I turned to my husband and said, "Could you ever have imagined when you were a kid that you would ever get anything from a Beatle? Wow, that must be wild."
And then he said the comment to Kanye and we both almost fell on the floor laughing! Way to defuse! You go Vinny!

You know, I mentioned Vince winning on a couple of mailing lists that I'm on...now both these lists have people from overseas on them...one from The Netherlands who comes over here every few months to visit a friend and buy CDs When I mentioned Vince winning, she posted back "just when I think I got things covers, another new artist gets some attention." So, hopefully she'll be checking out Vince's set next time she's over here. Of course I had to fill her in on Vince's history and just how many awards Vince has won and the fact that he's in the Hall of Fame.

I never heard the comment cause I didn't get to watch the show, but just reading these comments and everything, that's just Vince's way of humor - I don't think he meant to "diss" Kanye at all-Vince will be the first to tell you he's a smart alec. LOL

It was a hilarious moment and it truly generated the biggest laugh of the night. The audience roared! Kanye included.
