Yes, I watched it. It was a great show and such a nice surprise to have Vince singing with Carrie at the end. I thought maybe Vince would be the one inducting her, but it was exciting for Garth to be there and do the honors.

She's in the Country Music HOF after TWO album releases?

Once again I'll make the Sports HOF compasrison. That's like an athlete having TWO great seasons & making the HOF. I don't think so???

No, Reggie. She's not in the HOF. She became a member of the Grand Old Opry.

My fault. I guess I can't read. That's still a little early to be an Opry member, isn't it?

No, it's not really that early for her to be an Opry Member. When it was announced that Carrie was going to be the newest member, I went back thru some of the members who were inducted in the 1980s/1990s, and the majority had about the same number of albums/singles released as Carrie has. And in fact, Carrie has had more #1s than some of those inducted in the 1980s/1990s. I think it was Randy Travis who didn't have any #1s yet when he was inducted. And Lorrie Morgan....she hadn't even had a Top 10 hit at the time of her induction.

That might be true Val, bu tthose singers had "been around longer". Back then, an artist released an album every two or three years, now it seems like a "new artist" has an album out every year or every 18 months.

I think the point of getting some of the younger artist in the Opry is they are losing some of the older members and there really haven't been that many younger ones they feel would live up to what it takes to be an Opry member . They need people who will show up . So many of the younger ones just do not show or do not have any loyality to the Opry. I mean as much as I like Garth ,when was the last time you saw him on the Opry before Carrie becoming a member ? I guess what I am trying to say is they need more people like Vince

I think you're right. But they shouldn't change the criteria for being a Opry member.

what is the criteria exactly? pretty subjective isn't it? george strait is not a member. is that his choice or the opry's? other huge stars like toby and kenny chesney aren't either i think. it does seem like carie has a respect for country music and will hopefully show up at the opry some and appreciate it. at this rate taylor swift will be the next member this year i guess.

Charlie Daniels was just added not long ago too . George Strait was invited awhile back but declined because several years ago the members had to commit for a certain number of appearances per year and he said he was so very honored to be ask but he did so many other things that he just couldn't be there when he was supposed to be . At least he didn't become a member then just not show up ever or hardly ever . They did away with that so they could get new members to help replace those who had died . Now the criteria is to be invited and just show up as many times as you can . Notice when Vince inducted Josh Turner he emphasized that they really needed him . I don't know if there are any other requirements .

Just to add to this , I think in the last few years who ever decides who to ask they are pretty sure there will be some commitment to be there .

Has Garth ever showed up when it wasn't a "big event" night at the Opry?

Yes, I believe he has. I couldn't give you exact dates, but I have seen his name on the schedule for the non-televised portions before. He does live in Oklahoma, so that may be a factor in how often he plays the Opry. I also will say that when he is there for special events, I think he is very gracious about allowing the spotlight to be on other Opry members and not on himself. When it is a "big event" for another artist, he usually comes on as a surprise guest and either sings only as a back-up singer or not at all. Personally, I think that shows a lot of class.

I love Garth but I don't think he wears his welcome out at the Opry . I have heard Vince talk about some of the "older still hot artist " not appearing at the Opry as much as they could . Reba being one . I am not knocking these people because I like to hear them sing but I do think a lot of them could come to the Opry much more than they do . I don't think money is a factor in them getting there .
