Vince Gill Inspires Alan Jackson

September 18, 2006--Alan Jackson admits that the urge to do something musically different on his new album may have been fueled by a comment Vince Gill made while introducing him at the CMA Awards a couple of years back.

"I don't know if the script writer wrote it, but he said, 'You always know what you're going to get from Alan Jackson. It's like driving through McDonald's,'" Alan tells Billboard. "I think he meant it as a compliment, but it kind of made me feel like 'Dang, McDonald's, man! I don't want to be like every time somebody buys an album, they are getting just another quarter-pounder with cheese.'"

Now Alan, if you knew Vince like we knew Vince - you would KNOW that's a compliment - country wise.

I don't read it as Alan is uptight with Vince (it's a tribute to Alan's consistency and commitment to steadfast country sound - imho) ....but I agree, he should have said "I know Vince meant it as a compliment" instead. And...If it pushes Alan creatively to try "new things" - that may be a good thing. I have heard nothing but praise (reviews etc) of his Alison Krauss produced upcoming CD.

It will be interesting to see if it does have a different sound or feel from prior Jackson releases. What will Alan do to "shake" things up? I don't see "Like red on A Rose" as being too different than some of the work he has done in the past (very good song though).

Besides we all know Vince has more creativity than ANY musician in all genres! smile.gif

Boy I agree with you.I like AJ but I do feel he kind of sounds the same in most of his work,Vince is so unique in everything he records and has the ability to sing any kind of music not many folks can do that! He is like Guy Clark one of a kind ...

I wouldn't think A.J. would be upset at all about what Vince said. I remember that and it was ,I think ,meant as a compliment. I think there is a lot of respect from one artist to another . Vince meant that as ,IMO,Alan is country and when he does a song you know it's gonna be country and it's gonna be good. Consistantly good.
