Gill achieved his big breakthrough with “When I Call Your Name,” which won the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year award. RASCAL FLATTS SURPRISED WITH GRAND OLE OPRY INVITATION

Posted by on Sep 30, 2011 in News | Comments Off

By Kay West – People.com

When Rascal Flatts played the Grand Ole Opry Tuesday night, they weren’t expecting country legend Vince Gill to pop by … let alone with big news for the band.

Under the guise of collecting $500 from the trio after he “kicked their butts” on the golf course, Gill walked unannounced from the wings and took center stage.

The bandmates figured he was pulling one of his infamous pranks. “But when he said, ‘On behalf of the Grand Ole Opry,’ everything kind of slowed down, and we knew something big was happening, bassist Jay DeMarcus tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Indeed it was: Gill surprised the band with a long-awaited invitation to officially join the Opry. “My initial reaction was tears, but I knew we had to play another song!” says guitarist Joe Don Rooney. “I’ll probably cry like a baby when I get home tonight.”

LEANN RIMES, ‘WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME’ — EXCLUSIVE SONG PREMIERE

Listen – The Boot
Vince Talks Producing “When I Call Your Name”

Why We Love It: On her new album, ‘Lady and Gentlemen,’ LeAnn pays tribute to some of the country legends who influenced her career, putting her own spin on their classic tunes. A standout track on the project, due in stores Sept. 27, is ‘When I Call Your Name,’ the heartbreaking ballad by Vince Gill, who co-produced the project. Vince tells The Boot he insisted LeAnn make the song her own, and not just sing “a note for note version.”

“I started playing her some Sam Cooke records, so that she could hear it more like an R&B song,” he explains. “It was a neat way of doing the song, and she sang the fire out of it!”

On ‘Lady and Gentlemen,’ LeAnn also sings the fire out of tunes by Merle Haggard, George Jones, Tennessee Ernie Ford and Kris Kristofferson, among others. Two bonus tracks are the original songs ‘Crazy Women’ and ‘Give,’ and the songbird also revisits the tune that put her name on the country music map some 15 years ago, ‘Blue.’

By Allen Morridon – American Songwriter

“You people are either very lucky or very hooked up.” Bill Flanagan, the television executive and music critic, was warming up an invitation-only crowd at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan Tuesday night for a taping of the latest episode of CMT Crossroads. “This is the hottest ticket in New York tonight,” he said without exaggeration, “and the biggest show in Crossroads’ ten-year history.”

The critically-acclaimed CMT series matches country and rock stars, usually for one-night-only concerts (the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss pairing was an exception). The new show debuts November 25, the day after Thanksgiving.
