GUITAR HERO

Brian T. Atkinson – Austin360.com

From traditional to contemporary, songs from latest record highlight Gill’s versatility

Vince Gill’s “Guitar Slinger” spotlights the celebrated country  singer’s diversity both as a songwriter (“Threaten Me with Heaven”)  and a guitarist (the title track). The 55-year-old supports the collection  Saturday at ACL Live.

“I had a hard time getting started on a new record because (2006′s box  set ‘These Days’) was so massive,” Gill says. “But I found  my way through the songs that I liked. I just put a studio on my house so it  was a much more relaxed atmosphere.”

POP MATTERS REVIEWS GUITAR SLINGER

By Philip Majorins – Pop Matters

Vince Gill has earned a lot of respect over the course of his illustrious Nashville career. An exemplar of the country gentleman, his sweet tones and tasteful pickings have attracted fans from both sides of the modern/classic country divide. As a session player and solo artist his credentials proceed him in the soon to be released album Guitar Slinger. His first release since 2006’s These Days, a four-CD (43-song) box set that garnered much deserved critical acclaim. The thematic and rootsy These Days is an intimidating opus to follow, but one gets the sense that Vince Gill feels no pressure to repeat the artistic success of that formidable batch of tunes.

By Vernell Hackett – Reuters

Vince Gill mixed a little truth with just enough fiction in writing the songs for his new album, “Guitar Slinger,” that hit record stores and websites on Monday marking his first CD in five years.

Gill chose topics as diverse as a murder-suicide, an out-of-the way motel and “True Love” — a song he co-wrote with his wife of 11 years, Christian singer Amy Grant.

“I think songs like ‘Bread and Water,’ which I could say is the truth about my (late) brother, or ‘Billy Paul,’ about a caddy at my golf club who killed his girlfriend and himself, have what I call a step aside from truth,” Gill said.

GAC ALBUM REVIEW: VINCE GILL’S GUITAR SLINGER

By Daryl Addison – GAC

Vince Gill is getting personal on his new album. Very personal. In some ways, the title
Guitar Slinger downplays the heavy themes that Vince confronts on his
new twelve-song collection. Songs with names like “If I Die,” “Threaten Me With
Heaven” and “When Lonely Comes Around” give an indication that strong feelings
will not be ignored. Vince, who wrote or co-wrote every song on this record,
took much inspiration from events or people in his own life when writing it and
offers a look at the human condition in the process.
